Complete Guide to PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026

Everything you need to know about India's central rooftop solar subsidy — eligibility, ₹78,000 ceiling, the DBT process, and how to stack UPNEDA's ₹30,000 top-up in Uttar Pradesh.

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Launched on 13 February 2024 by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the largest residential rooftop solar programme in Indian history. With an outlay of ₹75,021 crore, it aims to deploy rooftop solar on 1 crore homes and deliver up to 300 free units of electricity every month per household. The scheme is operated through the National Portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in and the subsidy is credited via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

How much subsidy can you get?

₹30,000 for the first kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and a maximum of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. The subsidy is for residential consumers only — tenants and commercial premises are not eligible. The amount is credited to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account within 30 days of commissioning.

The Uttar Pradesh top-up — an extra ₹30,000

Residents of Uttar Pradesh enjoy an additional state-level subsidy of ₹30,000 disbursed by UPNEDA, on top of the central scheme. Stacked together, a typical 3 kW system in UP can attract up to ₹1,08,000 — bringing the effective system cost down dramatically.

Who is eligible?

You must be the property owner (not a tenant), hold a valid electricity connection in your name, have an Aadhaar-seeded bank account, and have a shadow-free roof of about 10 sq m per kW. Group Housing Societies and RWAs are also eligible for ₹18,000/kW for common-area installations with no upper cap.

The application process

Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in → apply for rooftop solar → DISCOM grants technical feasibility approval (typically 15 days) → choose a registered vendor → install ALMM-listed panels → apply for net metering → DISCOM inspection and commissioning → subsidy credited via DBT. Radion Power handles every step on your behalf.
