What is net metering?
Net metering is a billing arrangement where the energy your solar system exports to the grid is credited against the energy you import from the grid. In UP, this is regulated by UPERC and operated by the local DISCOM — PVVNL, MVVNL, DVVNL or PuVVNL.
The application process
1) Submit Form A on the UPPCL portal with your consumer details and proposed system size. 2) Pay the processing fee. 3) DISCOM inspects feasibility — typically within 15 working days. 4) After approval, install the system using ALMM panels. 5) Apply for net meter (bidirectional). 6) DISCOM inspector visits and synchronises the meter. 7) Commissioning certificate is issued and net billing starts.
Document checklist
Latest electricity bill, Aadhaar of consumer, property ownership proof, roof photograph, site layout, and Aadhaar-seeded bank account details for any export credit payouts.
Common rejection reasons
System size larger than sanctioned load, panels not on ALMM list, vendor not registered on portal, name on connection not matching the applicant. We pre-validate every project before submission to keep approval times under 4 weeks.
Settlement & banking
Excess units are banked against your future imports for up to 12 months. At year-end, any unsettled surplus is paid at the DISCOM's average pooled power cost — a small but real cheque every March.
